From Oct. 5th – 8th 2013, over 50 people climbed the Windshare turbine during the 2nd annual Climb the Turbine fundraiser presented by TREC Education. Participants were given a first hand look at how wind power works and got the chance to enjoy the fantastic view from the top. The event is truly one-of-a-kind, and as a result, participants came from across Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta and Virginia to climb the turbine.
The event is a great opportunity to utilize the turbine as a great renewable energy educational experience – de-mystifying the technology and bringing greater understanding of how wind turbines generate electricity. Also, the event raised $15,000 for TREC Education’s Kids’ World of Energy classroom program. This will result in hundreds more students engaging and learning about the science and advantages of renewable energy and energy conservation. The program facilitates workshops in classrooms across Ontario, providing hands-on, curriculum-linked activities that enable students to design and build functioning renewable energy systems (i.e. LED bulb powered by a small wind turbine).
