The Lakewind Project

The Ontario government's Green Energy and Green Economy Act of 2009 has enabled the long awaited development of TREC's 20 MW Lakewind project through two specific mechanisms.

The first is a right to connect for renewable energy generation facilities, which finally removed the barrier to grid access in Bruce County that had stalled Lakewind since 2006. The second is the Ontario Power Authority's Feed-In Tariff program, the most aggressive renewable energy support program in North America, which pays Lakewind an above-market rate for its power, including an additional price adder for being a community-owned project.

The Green Energy and Green Economy Act introduces world-class policy mechanisms to deliver sustainable job creation and 10,000 MW of new renewable generation to the grid by 2015, over and above 2003 levels.

In November of 2009, an application was submitted to the OPA for a 20 MW wind farm that will generate enough clean electricity to power 13,000 homes annually. The project will be located in the village of Bervie, just East of Kincardine and will generate local economic benefits for the region. A Feed-In Tariff contract was not immediately awarded as there are grid upgrades needed in the area and the LakeWind project is instead waiting for the OPA to complete an "Economic Connection Test" (http://fit.powerauthority.on.ca/Page.asp?PageID=122&ContentID=10383&SiteNodeID=1107) on the area to determine when grid capacity will be available for our project. In the meantime, we are completing environmental assessments and getting everything ready so that we can move forward with the project as soon as capacity is available.

TREC, as the most experienced community power project developer in Ontario, is eager to see this project move forward and enable the development of other community power projects in the province.
